The population of 18,958 comprise mainly of Dusun Tatana (32%), Bisaya (28%), Brunei (26%), Bajau (6%), Kedayan (5%) (Source: District Office, Kuala Penyu).  These  groups speak their own specific dialects and have their own ethnic culture, although there may be some similarities due to years of integration.  Add the Chinese community (2%) into this mix and you have a colourful society that  intermingle freely and live harmoniously together.
